Qualifications

  • A dynamic individual, fully certified as a Construction Electrician, combined with relevant and current industry work experience and demonstrated experience in training apprentices in the field.
  • Candidates must have at least five years of experience working as an electrician in installations or maintenance since achieving their Red Seal qualification.
  • Candidates must also hold a Field Safety Representative certification in either Class A-R, A, or C issued by Technical Safety BC.
  • The ideal candidate will have a diverse background including a high level of knowledge and exposure to the latest tools and technologies used in the construction and electrical industry today.
  • Along with extensive industry specific experience the candidate will possess leadership qualities; good interpersonal skills; good oral and written communication skills; and a good working knowledge of computers and various software applications and will be a strong team player.
  • Preference may be given to candidates with teaching experience and who have completed the Provincial Instructor Diploma.
  • This position requires someone who has demonstrated abilities for writing lesson plans and exam questions.
  • Further consideration will be given to those who have extensive connections and contacts with the local region and a broad involvement with local businesses and organizations. 

Description/Duties

The Faculty of Applied & Technical Studies invites applications for an Assistant Professor, Electrical. The successful candidate will be expected to have previous experience in delivering a Skilled Trades BC recognized electrical program in a primarily lecture format, as well as lab and shop training and online-training. 

We seek applicants who share our passion for, and commitment to, excellence in teaching in a student-centered environment; who successfully integrate their scholarship into their teaching; and who are experienced in the delivery of high-quality service in communities of practice, particularly in the trades and technical disciplines. 

As a teaching-oriented institution and department, we are seeking a collegial, energetic and innovative individual who has successful teaching experience and who communicates effectively with students both in and out of the classroom; can instruct across a range of the courses offered by the department; and can develop new and innovative courses. An ability to teach across traditional disciplinary boundaries would be an asset. 

Experience and interest in developing innovative learning strategies including problem-based learning methods is highly desirable. The successful candidate will show aptitude for working in team situations, and an interest in innovative inter-disciplinary teaching. 

Applicants will have a strong record as a practitioner, commensurate with their experience; demonstrated ability to lead design and problem-solving programs; and an ability to develop and transfer their experiences into applied learning opportunities for students.

The successful applicant will be expected to actively participate in departmental activities, service, events, and initiatives. A commitment to an ongoing program of professional development is required. The successful applicant will have a demonstrable ability to collaborate/interact effectively with external regulatory bodies or agencies.
