Do you have an eye for detail? Are you looking to begin your municipal career? If so, this position as an Electrical Inspector 1 within our Planning and Development department may be for you. In this role you will inspect all types of electrical equipment and installations to ensure that plans, workmanship, materials, methods, and safety precautions conform to specification and the requirements of the B.C. Electrical Code, B.C. Electrical Safety Act, Safety Standard Regulations, City Electrical Bylaws and policies. You will also be responsible for approving or rejecting work inspected; enforcing changes or corrections required. Advises owners, foremen and electricians of defective wiring and installation and issues oral and written instructions for correction; makes follow-up inspections and recommends legal action, if necessary. Additionally, you’ll be required to make surveys of wiring in buildings damaged by fire or reported as a fire hazard due to unauthorized wiring. Preparing work reports, records of inspections and objection notices, entering inspection results into the computer system and booking inspections is a routine part of the job. You will perform related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 and apprenticeship in electrical work, plus considerable experience as a journeyman electrician.  Thorough knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tools and equipment of the electrical trade; knowledge of the B.C. Electrical Code, B.C. Electrical Safety Act, Safety Standard Regulations ,City Electrical Bylaws applicable to electrical installations. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with owners, contractors, tradesmen and others. Enforce rules and ordinances with tact and diplomacy is essential. The ability to express ideas effectively both orally and in writing; prepare reports, write objection notices, maintain records using computer applications. The ability to travel to and perform field work on a variety of construction sites is required along with a Valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's License and a B.C. Certificate of Qualification as an Electrician. The ability to obtain an Inspector’s Certificate of Qualification as a Safety Officer from the BC Safety Authority is also required.

Hours of work:As this is an auxiliary position, hours and shifts can vary depending on operational requirements, and are scheduled on an as needed basis. Typical shifts in this position will be Monday to Friday between the hours of 7:30AM and 4:15PM.
