Salary Range/ Wage Rate: $84,528 - $100,369 per annum, plus 6.25% deferred compensation

Metro Vancouver is seeking an Instrument Mechanic Apprentice who has a keen interest and aptitude for repairing and maintaining instrumentation equipment, performing preventative maintenance, and ensuring machinery reliability for Operations to maintain the highest standards for water treatment and distribution, and wastewater collection and treatment throughout the Field Utilities, Wastewater Treatment Plants, and Water Treatment Plants in the Metro Vancouver region. 
 
This is an amazing opportunity for a committed, safety-conscious, self-starting individual to train both in school and on the job as an Instrument Mechanic Apprentice. During the 4-year apprenticeship training program, you will rotate through the various Metro Vancouver facilities, experiencing a wide variety of equipment and learning from other experienced tradespersons, in addition to the technical training you will receive at school.
 
The successful candidate will have Grade 12 graduation including successful completion of Grade 12 level mathematics, Grade 12 physics and/or chemistry or equivalent education.

The recruitment for this role will be a multiple step process including a trades entry assessment, panel interview, hands-on practical test and reference checks.
 
This role: (The duties described hereunder are intended to be representative of the position and are not to be considered all inclusive.)

  • Under the direction of an Instrumentation Supervisor or a qualified instrumentation tradesperson, performs a wide variety of assigned duties such as wiring, installation of wiring, transmitters, 4-20mA devices, digital and smart devices, ducts, conduits, cables, controls and other instrumentation equipment.
  • Cleans, calibrate, adjusts and maintains instrumentation equipment and systems.
  • Keeps records such as work order summaries and equipment data sheets; marks drawings to record modifications, and assists others in similar and related duties.
  • Assists with developing documentation for work-related procedures.
  • Works in compliance with all Metro Vancouver safety policies, procedures and WorkSafe BC regulations.

 
To be successful, you have:

  • Grade 12 graduation including successful completion of Grade 12 level mathematics, physics and/or chemistry or equivalent education.
  • Competency and aptitude testing is required.
  • Must be able to distinguish colours clearly.
  • Basic knowledge of instrumentation maintenance work.
  • Ability to understand complex operations and theories requiring analytical skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of the safe operation and care of hand and power tools.
  • The ability to read engineering drawings is an asset.
  • Must be computer literate and able to use applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Must have previous experience in work requiring manual dexterity and skills, such as construction assembly of equipment and electronics.
  • Must have excellent safety record and good knowledge of safety techniques and regulations.
  • Must have set of own hand tools.
  • Ability to work shift work as required.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License.

 
Note 1:  Preference will be given to those who have demonstrated training, interests or skills in the instrumentation trade, 120V electrical systems, electronics, computer, and communications technology. 
 
Note 2:  Upon successful completion and graduation as a trade qualified Instrumentation Mechanic, the incumbent will be reclassified to an Instrument Mechanic/Technologist IV.
