This is skilled technical work performing a variety of electrical maintenance, repair, and installation tasks for the City. A Trades 2 – Electrician installs, repairs, and programs traffic signal equipment such as controllers, vehicle detection and assessable pedestrian signals; and performs annual maintenance on traffic signal systems by testing the Malfunction Management Unit and updating software. Installs, inspects, tests and maintains electrical controls, alarms and motors for sewage and water pumps and related equipment; and maintains Variable Frequent Drive (VFD) and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) applications to ensure system alerts are functioning. Troubleshoots, repairs and maintains lighting circuits for street lighting and facility lighting; performs a variety of construction wiring and related maintenance tasks at City facilities; liaises with City staff regarding methods and requirements for electrical installations. Installs fiber optical cables into aboveground and underground ducts for existing networks. May supervise technical staff engaged in less skilled tasks and performs related work as required.

Qualifications include Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by the completion of a recognized Trade Certificate of Qualification – Electrician plus considerable experience at the journeyman level; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment; statutes, bylaws, rules, regulations and policies applicable to traffic operations and the Canadian Electrical Code. Considerable knowledge of hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Ability to install, operate, monitor, repair and maintain computerized traffic signal systems and other electrical equipment used by the City; ability to operate a truck, aerial bucket truck, a variety of small hand tools and electrical testing equipment. The ability to deal tactfully and diplomatically with City staff and the general public; to assign and supervise the work of staff; to work in inclement weather. Skill in the use and care of all tools, materials, and equipment essential to the work. A Certificate of Qualification-Electrician and a Class 5 Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia are required.

The successful candidate will be required to accept standby and call-out work assignments as required by the department.
